Memory and Brain Function Improvement for Diabetics
Type 2 Diabetes - Memory and Brain Function Improvement for Diabetics |
Damage to the nervous system can have severe consequences for people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes: whether it's smaller nerves in their hands or feet, or the brain itself. Resveratrol, a molecule found in grape peel, is thought to have beneficial effects on the heart and blood vessels. According to the Annals of the New York Academy of Science in January of 2011, resveratrol is thought to protect against...
- blocked blood vessels,
- high blood pressure,
- lack of oxygen in the heart, and
- heart failure.
Scientists at the University of Newcastle in Callaghan, Australia, and DSM Nutritional Products in Basel, Switzerland, studied resveratrol consumption and brain function in adult Type 2 diabetics. Their study, published in July 2016 in the journal Nutrients, included 36 adults aged between 40 and 80 years of age. The Type 2 diabetics taking 75 mg of resveratrol per week performed better on tests of brain function than the diabetics taking a placebo. The researchers concluded improvement in blood flow helped improve brain function. They went on to say further research is warranted.
Interest in resveratrol began when it was found French people drinking red wine had fewer heart problems than people who did not make drinking red wine a habit. Many studies have used rodents as participants, so the benefits to human beings are still not well-defined. Claims resveratrol will confer a longer life, protect against an unhealthful lifestyle, and promote weight loss are not proven.
Resveratrol supplements are not considered medications, so control over what is being sold and how it is labeled is lax. Anyone taking blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin) or medications in the aspirin family can have unusual bleeding when adding this particular supplement and should consult their doctor before starting them or any other kind of food supplement.
Other foods containing this molecule include...
- peanuts,
- blueberries, and
- dark chocolate.
- Vitamin A - 2

- Vitamin B6 - 4
- Niacin - 3
- Folate - 2
- Riboflavin - 4
- Thiamin - 4
- Fiber - 14
- Calcium - 1
- Iron - 2
Blueberries also contain 85.5 mg of omega-3 fats and 130 mg of omega-6 fats.
While the jury is still out regarding resveratrol, isn't it great to know something known to be good for you could be helping your heart and blood vessels as well?
Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
